Located in the heart of Manhattan’s Lincoln Center neighborhood, this apartment renovation transforms a compact floor plan into a spacious, light-filled home tailored for contemporary urban living. At the core of the design is a deep understanding of how to work with existing constraints to create functionality and elegance.
The client, who works from home extensively, requested an integrated office solution that wouldn't feel isolated. Rather than enclosing a separate room, we designed a custom-built work area as part of the living space—framed by full-height shelving and open millwork—to create a dedicated zone for productivity while remaining visually connected to the rest of the apartment.
The living room and kitchen are thoughtfully arranged around a fixed structural column and service shaft. Since this element could not be relocated, we embraced it—wrapping it in custom millwork to create a central organizing feature that anchors the space while housing storage and media, as well as the induction cooktop and kitchen cabinetry on the kitchen side.
In the bedroom, two custom closets flank the bed, allowing it to be perfectly centered while creating a framed area for art display and integrated lighting. This architectural gesture not only grounds the bed within the room but also balances functionality with visual harmony.
The primary bathroom is clad in large-format porcelain tile, offering a crisp, monolithic contrast to the warmth of bespoke white oak vanity and storage millwork. The clean material transitions highlight the tactile quality of each surface while maintaining a cohesive visual narrative throughout the apartment.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful detailing and strategic millwork can elevate even the most constrained spaces into highly livable, visually cohesive environments.
